Common Cause proposes independent lines
Common Cause NY, in concert with New York Newsday, recently unveiled its proposal for independently drawn lines for Assembly, Senate and Congressional districts. Type in Common Cause NY on Google and click on the site which will bring you to a page outlining the proposed districts for the next 10 years. In Niagara County, the organization proposes splitting the 138th Assembly district into two districts: the current 138th district would, under the plan, be composed of Lewiston, Porter, Wilson, Cambria, Lockport (town) and Lockport (city) and the Town of Clarence in Erie County. That proposal would set up a Primary between current incumbents Ceretto and Jane Corwin who currently represents Clarence and all of Lockport. The city of Niagara Falls would join the city of North Tonawanda, town of Niagara and town of Wheatfield, Grand Island and a portion of the city of Tonawanda to make up a new 144th Assembly district. Most importantly, under the Common Cause plan Maziarz DOES NOT get Niagara Falls. Instead, he loses the cities of North Tonawanda and Lockport and would represent a district stretching from Lewiston to rural Erie County towns and rural Monroe County towns. Could we, in Niagara County, get lucky enough to put this guy in a district that, while mostly Republican, would marginalize his ability to create havoc everywhere else? We can only hope and urge that the Governor and the Legislature will uphold their agreement to write the lines so they truly reflect the makeup of the state.
