— State Sen. George Maziarz isn’t shy when it comes to railing against the evils of downstate interests and their impact on conditions in Western New York.
Evidently, he also isn’t shy when it comes to raising political campaign money downstate.
As per an item that appeared in the New York Daily News last week, Maziarz has scheduled a campaign fundraiser later this month in New York City.
Of interest are the special guests listed on the invitation.
One was none other than Mr. Senate Gridlock himself, recently appointed Senate Democratic Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr.
Earlier this summer, Espada flipped political parties in the now infamous state Senate coup which was orchestrated, in part, by Maziarz. Espada joined the Republicans temporarily. triggering a series of events that resulted in a month-long shutdown of state government.
According to the invitation, the Maziarz fundraiser will also feature Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 24 at the Penn Club in New York City.
The cost is $500 per person, with checks payable to the Maziarz State Senate campaign committee.
Espada’s people later distanced themselves from the fundraiser, sending the Daily News the following a few days after the invitation surfaced:
“Although Senator George Maziarz is a colleague and friend and someone whom I have great respect for, I want to make it very clear that I never gave authorization for my name to appear on the invitation and was unaware that my name was being used in this manner. Nor did I receive this invitation.”
It would be interesting to see Espada helping Maziarz raise money.
After all, he’s supposed to be a Democrat again.
He is, isn’t he?
Oh well.
Downstate. Upstate. Republican. Democrat.
I guess it really doesn’t make much difference.
In politics, 500 bucks is 500 bucks.
